This isn’t a typical list of what to pack for South America. I am sure you will be able to find a lot of articles, but rather a best and practical tips of our favorite tried and tested recommendations. I have put together 14 tips for backpacking South America.

1. Avoid Suitcase
Prefer taking a backpack as there will be a lot of places where you won’t be able to roll your suitcase. South America is not a friendly place for walkers and suitcases. Having a backpack will both secure and ease your traveling.
2. Raincoat
Rains are short-lived in South America but it can happen often. It is best to be prepared.
3. Keep some extra cash and divide it
South America is an expensive destination. Overall you can book everything in advance and grab best deals on stays and tours, but in the everyday life, taxis, entry fees, and the food is something we don’t count much.
4. Wear long pants
Many countries in South America are Catholic. Catholic countries are conservative. There will be many places when you will need to cover your legs and shoulders, as it is considered respectful.
5. Take sunscreen
Don’t worry, it is not going to be hot but equatorial sun mixed with some mighty tall mountains can be very powerful and without proper protection, you will burn your skin. It is advisable to use it as and when needed.
6. Carry a bottle
There are plenty of places where you will be able to find purified water. Carry a bottle along with you and keep yourself hydrated.
7. Pack light
You will be moving around a lot and will have to carry your bag with you. Taxis are expensive as well as time-consuming. At every stop or place, it is not convenient to stop for the cab. Packing light is anyways a good thing when you don’t want to harass by the trouble of carrying it.
8. Prefer comfort over style
There are a lot of places to move around and walking long distances. It is must to make comfort a priority. For hiking, overnight bus rides trek pants will be very helpful
9. Be safe
Pickpocketing is one issue there, so while packing make sure to take all bags, treks and all your luggage with zips and locks.
10. Locals are helpful
Locals in South America are good, it’s completely safe to take their advice and guidance as and when needed. Connecting with local culture is also an important part of traveling
11. Learn basic Spanish
Locals feel more connected when we speak their tongue. Learning their language will help.

Whether you’re hiking in the mud or exploring the treks, Rain can come anytime and it should not spoil your day. Take waterproof socks.
13. Take your medication
It’s difficult to find your brand and simple medications easily. The doctor’s prescription is also difficult to get. The best way to avoid complication is to carry it along with you.
14. Use the internet
There is wifi available everywhere, also the sim cards are not too expensive. It is best to take one for yourself on the trip.
