Drive across the Central Volcanic Mountain Range to arrive at La Fortuna. On clear days you will have the opportunity to see the Arenal Volcano with its almost perfect conic shape. Visit one of the world’s most active volcanoes. After sleeping quietly for more than 400 years, the Arenal erupted with tremendous force in July 1968. The volcano has an almost perfect cone, which soars 1,633m above sea level and has a crater of 140m deep formed over an ancient “caldera” (boiler).
In the afternoon departure around the Arenal Lake, the largest and the most important freshwater lake in Costa Rica. Continue through a non-paved sinuous road to arrive at Monteverde. Located at 1440 m (4,662 ft) above sea level, Monteverde is privileged to receive a steady supply of clouds and their life-giving moisture. It supports a complex and far-reaching ecosystem, one that harbors over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species, and over 2,500 varieties of plants, 420 of which are orchids alone. The insects, reptiles, mammals and birds that live here can be found in great numbers. Birds include the three-wattled bellbird, bare-necked umbrellabird, keel-billed toucan, long-tailed manakin, and resplendent quetzal. White-faced and howler monkeys reside here, as do jaguars, agouti, and the three-toed sloth.

This is a perfect combination for nature lovers. Discover the rain forest in this unique national park and enjoy the beautiful beaches of Manuel Antonio. Four especially interesting features of the park can be visited. First, the “tombolo” on Cathedral Point, which unites the ancient Cathedral Island to the mainland. The beaches of Espadilla Sur and Manuel Antonio Beaches are located here. Second, the blowhole at Escondido Port, which is best viewed with the incoming tide. Third, Serrucho Point, an awesome, deeply eroded cliff in the shape of a saw, honeycombed with sea caves. Fourth, the pre-Columbian underwater turtle trap, on the western tip of Manuel Antonio Beach, the best place to watch innumerable tiny fish at low tide. Presently, 350 species of vascular plants have been identified in the park, including 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. Some of the resident avian species are the brown pelican, laughing falcon, black-collared hawk, white ibis, white-bellied chachalaca, white-collared cuejo, fiery-billed aracari, green kingfisher and northern jacana.
