Introduction

Join your fellow IMASC members on an adventure to Peru!  Discover the once lost empire of Machu Picchu and the charms of Cuzco.  

Itinerary

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and check-in (hotel check-in time is 2:00 pm). 

Meet your local PKT guide and transfer to the hotel to rest and relax.  

Overnight at Country Club (or similar)

After breakfast, enjoy a half-day city tour of Lima.  Visit outstanding monuments such as Government Palace, City Halls, the Cathedral, and the Archiepiscopal Palace at the Plaza Mayor.  The tour continues to the modern residential suburb of San Isidro and continue to downtown Miraflores, with its Park of Love to enjoy a splendid view of the Pacific Ocean.

After the city tour of Lima, transfer from the hotel to the airport and board your flight bound for Cuzco.  Upon arrival in Cusco, our guide and private coach will be waiting for you to take you to the Sacred Valley. En route we will visit the Awanacancha Center where you will have the opportunity to see local camelids.  Continue with the journey and go through the Inca Valley onto Pisac Market where you will see the locals selling their products as their handicrafts. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.  Afterwards, transfer back to the hotel for the night.  

Overnight at Rio Sagrado Hotel (or similar)

After an early breakfast, private tour to the town of Chinchero which appears in the middle of the fields. At a very colorful fair in the main square, the local people wearing bright dresses get together to barter their products: goods as well as handicrafts. Around the main square, the remains of an Inca wall and the frescoes on the portico of the Colonial church can be observed. After that we will visit the Andean Textile Workshop to attend a unique Andean weaving demonstration.  Then Lunch at the Huayoccari restaurant followed by a short drive to Ollantaytambo a fortress built during the Inca Empire, excellent sample of military architecture.  Return to the hotel.

Overnight at Rio Sagrado Hotel (or similar)

After breakfast, your local PKT guide and private coach will pick you up from the hotel to take you to the train station. Enjoy a short train journey through the Valley in the Panoramic Vistadome train (economy class) to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, take a bus ride up to Machu Picchu, where you will enjoy a guided tour of this amazing citadel. After some time at the Citadel, enjoy a buffet lunch at the restaurant located next door to Machu Picchu. Check in at the hotel and enjoy free time on your own. 

Overnight at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge (or similar)

After breakfast at the hotel, take advantage of the opportunity to visit Machu Picchu and/or hike Huayna Picchu Mountain.  Our local guide will pick you up from the hotel to take you to the citadel to Huayna Picchu or will lead you to Inti Punku. This would be your chance to enjoy a perfect day with marvelous views of Machu Picchu and surroundings. Lunch at the hotel, with a selected menu. At the coordinated time, take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes.  In the afternoon, take the Vistadome train back to Cusco. Transfer from the train station to your hotel in Cusco.

Overnight at Belmond Palacio Nazarenas (or similar)

In the morning, you'll be picked up from the hotel for a local walking tour to the San Pedro local market of Cusco, the main Cathedral, The Temple of the Sun very well known as the Koricancha temple. Walk through Cusco towns through its cobblestone streets, as it charming Main Plaza and some others around the place.

Continue with the tour to the surrounding ruins: the fortress of Sacsayhuamán, the Inca bath of Tambomachay, the military outpost of Puca Pucara and the amphitheater of Kenko.  In the evening, return to the hotel and relax until it's time for dinner.

Overnight at Belmond Palacio Nazarenas (or similar)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport in Cusco for your flight to Puerto Maldonado.  Upon your arrival tansfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the river port on the Madre de Dios River, take a 25 minutes journey down the Madre de Dios River by motor canoe.  You'll transfer to your lodge in the Peruvian Amazon.

Enjoy lunch and a brief rest to avoid the early afternoon heat. Then we once again board the catamaran and set off to explore the entire west end of the lake. Here, in the flooded palm forest we drift to the sounds of hundreds of Red-Bellied Macaws as they return to the palm forest for the night. This macaw species is found locally in parts of the Amazon, always living in flooded palm forests such as the beautiful palm stand at Sandoval Lake. At 500-800 birds, this flock of macaws at Sandoval Lake is currently the largest reported in the world for this highly-specialized macaw. For those with lots of energy, our guide will take us on a short night-walk into the forest behind the lodge.  Dinner tonight will be at the lodge.

Overnight at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica (or similar)

A pre-dawn wake-up call will enable us to be on the lake for sunrise and a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters who frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day.  Sandoval Lake offers abundant wildlife including over 40 species of birds resident to its lake margins, most of the fish-eating water birds around the lake actively fish in the early morning as well, and this outing should provide excellent views, of the prehistoric- looking Hoatzins, These are easy to observe and also photograph from the paddled canoes or catamarans.

After returning for a late breakfast we set off into the cool under story of the tall virgin forest near the lake to see some towering wild Brazil Nut trees and a demonstration of how our hosts collect, open and commercialize this important natural product.

After lunch and an hour or so to relax we once again board the catamaran to explore the eastern part of the lake, where we might see one or more of the five species of monkeys who live in the forest near the lake, such as the Brown Capuchin Monkey and Squirrel Monkey.

Before dinner we will again enjoy an informative natural history video or slide presentation.

We will leave after dinner to try and spot some Black Caimans on the lake, or to go on a short night walk through the primary forest.

Overnight at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica (or similar)

After early breakfast we leave near dawn and we enjoy a final activity before returning by motor canoe for the 35 minutes return trip to the Puerto Maldonado Airport, taking advantage of valuable early morning wildlife activity along the river.  


Then transfer to the airport for your flight back to Lima and onwards to your next destination.
